Update

Tuesday, August 31st

It has been six weeks and two days since Justina's car accident. Considering everything Justina has been through, she is doing well. It has been a while since we have updated Justina's website. A lot has happened. Let me (Alisha, Justina's sister) update you all.

Our Papa came for a month (or so) to help around the house (cleaning, folding clothes, cook and much more) and physical therapy with Justina. Words can not express how grateful we are to have Papa around. Especially since he just turned eighty. We are definitely blessed with a wonderful Grandfather, like himself. Unfortunately, Papa had to go back home on the 24th of this month. But we had a wonderful time having him around and Justina loved it also.

Back to Justina.

Justina went back to the orthopedic doctor the middle of August for a check-up. The doctor took x-rays and told us that Justina's bones are healing. Yes, it's still uncomfortable and painful (mostly at nights now) for Justina to walk. But she is a champ!!! Justina is strong enough to walk with crutches. She started walking with crutches about 3 weeks after her accident (the doctors said she would not be able to use them until 4 weeks). At first, Justina needed help to walk down the stairs, but now she can do it by herself (with the help of a crutch). It was hard at first for her, but little by little she has become stronger and stronger. I believe with Justina being a dancer, her body is healing faster.

One of Justina's biggest outings:
Justina went to Queen City Church, which meets on Sunday evenings at 6:30pm. Justina's great friend, Tori brought her. It brought tears to my eyes seeing her there at church. Just thinking five weeks prior, she could have been in a different place. I thank the Lord so much for her life. She is a miracle.
Since Justina's visit to Queen City Church, she has gone to other places. Movies, coffee dates, people's houses. A few hours out of the day, it is good to get her out of the house. I love seeing Justina walk and doing normal things.

Today, Justina and I went to Old Navy (just like two sisters would do). A women who worked there asked, "If you don't mind me asking what happened to you, why do you have crutches?" Justina was very low key about her respond, "I got t-boned about six weeks ago, and fractured my pelvis and cracked some ribs." The worker couldn't believe that had happened and told her she looks very normal. The point in saying that is, even though one of the worst things happened to Justina...she is here with us and we are so thankful.

Question: How is Justina today?
Her bones are healing. Which is good and bad. Pain is always an issue, but she gets through it. Justina has had many friends visit her, which has been great for her. It brings her life.
Justina and my family are very thankful for everyone's generosity and prayers. We could not have done it without all of y'all. Thank you!!!!

Also, thanks to everyone who has come to the house to help clean/organize, bring meals and help in any other way. THANKS!!!!!

Justina still has medical bills coming in. So, if you would still like to help in any way, here is what you need to know.

Update (from Candace):
Justina was able to find an orthopedist at OrthoCarolina. Mom and Dad said that they really liked him and so did Justina. They were able to get a reduced rate because she were self pay and that was encouraging. She is scheduled to go back in 2-3 weeks. As far as I know, everything looked pretty "normal" as far as healing.

Last night, Jonathan and Melissa Helser came to visit along with young people from "The 18 inch journey-" this is a summer program that Justina has taught at throughout the summer. They all prayed over Justina and spent time worshiping the Lord. It was a sweet time for Justina to see all her friends but all to worship (because we all know that is her favorite).

July 26, 2010 update

Update: July 26, 2010

Hello everyone! This is Candace Brinkley Williams- Justina's sister. We have had some confusion about this website, so let me explain:

Several people have joined together and decided to help Justina. At the forefront of that is Evelyn Whitley and Tori Zananiri. They are helping our family with various needs that have come up and will come up. They also expressed the desire to raise funds to help Justina pay for her incurring medical bills. So, this website was designed to update people on things that happen weekly with Justina and our family and also to be a place where people can donate funds or link up to the "Take them a meal" website. At the end of every post will be a list of needs, the link to donate, and the link if you want to bring my family a meal.

Today has been a pretty good day for Justina. We set up an appointment with the Orthopedic doctor-- one thing off the list! This is where more bills could start to add up so please pray that the doctor will have a simple treatment plan and do it in a timely manner. We also found out that the Home Health Agency has accepted her as a "charity" case. Wonderful news! I am not sure why Home Health accepted her and the hospital did not...but we are so encouraged!

As a family we would like to thank the hundreds of people who have sent letters, e-mails, gifts, donation, and made meals! I know that we have been overwhelmed with kindness and prayers. We are so thankful to those who have gone the extra mile (Evelyn Whitley, Tori Zananairi, Jenks, Johnny and Mel, and all of those who know who you are). I personally have been surprised at how many of my classmates from nursing school have signed up to bring my family meals- how can I express my gratitude? It has helped me to cope because I am back in Georiga....Thank you CCHS girls!

Also people have asked where they can send cards or money directly:

*Make checks out to Charles Brinkley or to Evelyn Whitley (She has set up the "Support Justina Brinkley" Foundation)

Below is the story, links and contact info:

On July 18, on her way to lead worship at New Life Church in Boone, Justina Brinkley, a senior at Appalachian State University (ASU), was in an automobile accident. Broadsided by an SUV, she suffered six broken ribs, a punctured lung, a lacerated spleen, seven fractures on her pelvis, and a broken sacrum. Just before she was hit, Justina threw her hands up in the air according to an eyewitness, an act that miraculously protected her hands and face from injury. Overwhelmed with gratefulness, she and her family recognize that the Lord not only kept her life but also made it possible for her continue to play her instruments during this time of recovery.

The bill for two days in ICU and two more on the orthopedic floor has already reached over $60,000. At the time of the accident, Justina was not insured by health insurance nor did she have supplemental insurance with her auto insurance. She was informed by the hospital that her only option is to pay the entire amount or to make a minimal monthly payment of hundreds of dollars with added interest charges for many years to come.

On July 21st, Justina was released from the hospital. As an Art Education major with a minor in Dance, we are praying for 100% recovery.

Friday, fifth day after accident, Justina started her day with physical therapy. Her friend, Jessica Jenkins (Jenks), one of her roommates from ASU, helped her with her physical therapy. It was very painful for her but she worked through it. She is such a champ! Her therapist believes that her recovery time will be much shorter then anticipated by the doctors.

Tonight, Emily Hardee Kearns brought over dinner and dessert for the entire family. It was great for Justina to catch up with an old friend from high-school. After dinner, Candace (the second oldest of the Brinkley girls) did some physical therapy with Justina. We are expecting family members this evening, and a very special member: her Grandfather.

Please let us know if you would like to send Justina mail. We know that she would appreciate it.

PRAYER and NEEDS:

· There is a great deal of pain with this type of injury

· Funds to cover present medical bills, medications, and physical therapy

· An Orthopedist in the Charlotte area who will accept a non-insured patient

· Meals for the family. If you would like to help go to: http://takethemameal.com. Search for "Brinkley"and the password is JUST.

· Practical help for the family (Cleaning house, mowing lawn, grocery shopping, errands)

**If you would like to help please contact Evelyn Whitley at: evewhitley@aol.com**

Now, for all of you who know Justina, you know that she appreciates "would you rather" questions.
Today's question is:
Would you rather wear dry contacts for a month or your fingers be stumps?
(Please feel free to write your choice)
